Protecting Yourself FROM Yourself

It’s a fact: Most people are probably their own worst enemy when it comes to money!

We say we want to save, but we don’t. We say we’re not going to put anything else on our Credit Card but we do. We try to make smart choices with money but that is not what happens.

Why?

Because we are all human and we all have emotions and beliefs and habits and relationships that come into the equation that get in the way of common sense and logic. Add to that, the fact that nobody ever taught us what we needed to know about money when we were kids, and you soon realise you have an uphill battle ahead of you if you ever want to achieve your money goals. You need to take deliberate action unless you’re prepared to just go along with whatever comes your way and in that case you better prepare for a very bumpy ride!

So, one of the smartest things you can do to be more successful with money is to protect yourself FROM yourself so you can overcome these issues. To do that you need to get really clear on what your strengths and weaknesses are.

Today I’m going to talk about the Five Love Languages. Have you heard of the Five Love Languages? Do you know what your primary Love Language is? Do you know why it’s important to know? If you don’t know them they are:

  • Acts of Service
  • Giving of Gifts
  • Physical Touch
  • Spending Quality Time
  • Words of Praise and Affirmation

Love is one of our basic human motivators (we all want love), and so it has a strong influence on all aspects of our life. Your Love Language makes you special and unique as a human being. However, it can have a significant impact on your spending habits so it can make you vulnerable as well.

Making intelligent financial choices is important for your future financial prosperity and wealth, but if (for example), your love language is the Giving of Gifts, you will find it much more difficult to make those intelligent financial choices, because deep down you will be driven to buy gifts for people to express love.

We are always too close to ourselves to see our own weaknesses so it is wise to have an independent and trustworthy person to help you get clarity. That’s why many people now have a Spending Planner to help them with this.

Your Love Language is just one personality related factor that will determine your financial outcomes in life. Take a good look in the mirror and work out what yours is, using the list I gave earlier. As you learn more about life and money you learn that wealth is less about money and more about being consistent and removing your personal weaknesses from your finances.

Don’t get sucked into the story that says if you earn a higher income you will have more money and be a happier person. That is rarely the case.

Take Control of Your Finances

If you can take control of your spending by making some of the little changes above, you'll put some breathing space between you and your money stress, allowing you to relax and start building a stable financial future for your family. How many expenses do you accept in your day without question, and where could you reduce your weekly outgoing money just by changing a few habits? If you just can't get your head around that and/or you are tired of money stress and have decided it's time to take control, talk to a Spending Planner to find out how you can break the cycle. BOOK A FREE CALL
